Martin Butler studied at the Royal Northern College
of Music before gaining a Fulbright Scholarship to Princeton University,
USA, where he was resident between 1983 and ’87. On returning
to Europe, Butler spent a short but influential period at Tempo Reale,
Berio’s studio in Florence. The author of two operas, orchestral
works, and a diverse chamber music catalogue, the composer’s
music follows personal enthusiasms and interests in jazz, folksong,
and early music, exploring the elements that give each their identity.
