Cutting Edge Workshops 2003
As part of its education work the BMIC continues to develop its
links with higher education establishments in offering workshop
opportunities to students. The following ensembles are giving composition
workshops in conjunction with their Cutting Edge concerts. For further
information about participating in these and future education projects,
please contact Emma Welton at emma@bmic.co.uk or on 020 7499 8567.
BEAST (Birmingham Electro-Acoustic Sound Theatre)
BEAST is primarily about the diffusion of acousmatic electroacoustic
music - i.e. music on 'tape' (or CD/hard disk etc these days). We
offer University/Conservatoire composers who have this sort of piece,
but who don't have ready access to a big diffusion system to play
it on, the chance to work hands-on with the BEAST setup on their
piece. There will also be an outline of the system by BEAST director,
composer Jonty Harrison.
O K E A N O S
Linking in with the theme of their Cutting Edge concert, OKEANOS
(oboe, clarinet, harp and viola) will workshop pieces inspired by
graphics, graffiti and sculpture. Composer and Bristol University
Reader in Composition Geoff Poole will lead the workshop.
RNCM brass ensemble with Philip Mead
Piano, with 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba
Pianist Philip Mead will offer a workshop with himself on piano
and a quintet taken from the wind and brass ensemble of the RNCM.
Philip will lead the workshop together with Jim Gourlay, tuba player
and Head of Brass at RNCM.
Ensemble Exposé
Ensemble Exposé will workshop pieces written for oboe quintet
(oboe, 2 violins, viola, cello). The workshop will be led by composer
and Goldsmiths University lecturer Roger Redgate.
Stephen Gutman & Richard Benjafield
The piano and percussion duo will workshop pieces written using
the Edward Gibbons ‘What strikes the Clocke?’ piece
as a model. Composers must each incorporate the chiming of the hours
from one to twelve. During the workshop, composers will be encouraged
to discuss the brief and their experience of working to a strict
parameter in composition.
Participating institutions: Goldsmiths College,
Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Oxford Brookes University,
Reading University, The Royal Academy of Music, Royal Holloway University
of London, Surrey University.
Bmic would like to thank Goldsmiths College, the Royal Academy
of Music, and Guildhall for providing venues for these workshops.
